Spider-Woman- Julia Carpenter [Halloween 2020]
Here’s another piece that dates me, surely. I don’t think Julia Carpenter springs to mind when most fans, both young and old, think about Spider-Woman. She wasn’t my favorite, as compared to Jessica Drew, but after Peter Parker wore my favorite costume redesign as Spider-Man, it was a nice nod to that look, even as he slipped into Venom territory. Design-wise, they seemed to have been looking to differentiate her from her male counter-part’s design, rather than just do a unisex version as we later saw with Spider-Man and some versions of Spider-Woman in the following decade. As a huge fan of Drew, I remember at the time being pleased that they didn’t nod to her look when introducing this entirely new character. For this Halloween pinup, I pulled the spider motif into ribbing in the corset, and used satin gloves and white nylons to evoke the telltale imagery from Carpenter’s costume. The mask is obviously more of a reference to Peter’s look, hers not being full face, but I was trying to make it convex like a plastic holiday costume element. Fun stuff!
