Muerta - Book of Life
I love love LOVE Book of Life. The conceit to build the world out of the imagery of Mexican marionettes was brilliant, and the materiality of everything and the streamlined design style was mesmerizing to me. I had wanted to do a pinup based on Muerta from the film almost immediately, but I’ve worked on this piece off and on for maybe four years? Yeah, that works out, as it came out in 2014. All was almost lost after a catastrophic data error during the rendering phase, and I actually redid it, something I rarely do. But it was worth it, I think! One of my favorites! One significant change from the animated design is the arms of the gown, which I brought full length and adorned with flowers. I wanted the sleeve to bunch back on her raised arm. I like the original design, but the white shirt cuffs I felt competed with her skin tone.
