The Joker [Redesign]
This was the first of my Clean Slate Redesigns, where I distill the character concept into one sentence and then draw from that without thinking of the canon version as much as possible. In this one, it was ‘insane murderer in clown costume’ or something like that. I took inspiration from Stańczyk, a painting by Jan Matejko finished in 1862, subsequently stolen bythe Nazis but returned to Poland after the war. It is a culturally pivotal work and I was struck by the colors and despair. I gave my Joker a bullet proof vest and a gravedigger’s shovel. Wotchowt!
