Bull in the Drum - Expanse
I was commissioned this year for a very special piece: the mission was to show Carlos ‘Bull’ Baca, a character from the Expanse books that was lost in translation when adapted for TV, staying into the well of the space station drum. So many interesting design challenges on this. The client wanted his back to the viewer to see the mech he’s strapped to after his spinal accident, but not necessarily the focal point of the piece. We wanted bright illumination but to also show the complexity of pattern formed by all of the cargo containers and bolt on modules that form the interior of the station once the Nauvoo became the Behemoth after the Belters claimed the ship. As the structure is indeed more ship than station, and not a Von Braun style radial design with a gravity core, I used the open space in the center of this concept to be a ‘airspace’ for moving containers around. I wanted tension so Bull is to the side and the gantries and major platforms are not radially aligned with the one point perspective. Zoom in for detail. The station took months to complete… artistically speaking. This was a passion project, as the Expanse is one of my favorite anythings ever and I had yet to do any art related to the series. The original was printed large format and custom framed. Awesome commission from an awesome (and patient) client!
