The best thing about Cryptohistorical Redesign is recontextualizing costume or character details in new ways. This one sets the couple in the late 19th century. I drew inspiration from ladies fashion from a decade or two past, trying to show that they would look curious and antiquated even at the time the image was capturing. I pulled his uniform together based on formal dress uniforms for non-combat officers in the Civil War but modified it heavily, sort of like the Sgt. Pepper’s vibe. I wanted him to look extravagant and exotic but also extremely weird. A cosplay couple at one of my shows insist they are working on this look for a future show and I can’t wait!
